5 Tips to Keep Your Hands Soft, Healthy and Young!


If you were to ask me what my favorite part of my body is, my hands would be the answer! They make my life easier and I’m lucky to have them. Plus, I’ve gotten quite a few compliments on how soft my hands are in the past. I personally think hands are often neglected and could use a little more daily care, so I’m going to share my 5 tips for keeping your hard-working hands soft, healthy and young!

1. Exfoliate!

Exfoliating is important for removing dry and dead skin in order to achieve smooth hands. You can easily make a quick DIY exfoliator by mixing together a few ingredients that you most likely have at home. Try mixing a spoonful or two of equal parts honey and sugar. Optional ingredients include a little bit of oil such as coconut or olive oil for a moisturizing effect, and/or a few drops of lemon juice for a brightening effect. Use oil in place of honey if you prefer. Dampen your hands and gently scrub them with your exfoliator, then rinse under warm water. They turn out so soft! You won’t be able to stop rubbing your hands together. Make sure to follow up with a good, rich moisturizer. Do this once or twice a week for consistently soft hands!

2. Use Anti-Aging Moisturizer!

Moisturizing alone already prevents early aging signs and wrinkles, so why not get a little added bonus in your hand cream by using one with anti-aging ingredients? A good moisturizer, preferably one with anti-aging effects, will keeping your hands feeling soft all day while looking healthy and plump. Make sure to keep one with you to use throughout the day, after you wash your hands and before going to bed at night so that your skin can absorb it while you’re sleeping. My current favorite hand cream and recommendation is the TONYMOLY Peach Anti Aging Hand Cream (look out for an in-depth review about it on my blog soon!). The packaging is adorable, it smells exactly like peaches, it keeps my hands soft and moisturized all day, plus it has anti-aging effects!

3. Apply Cuticle Oil!

Cuticles and nails play a huge part in how nice a person’s hands look. If you don’t take care of your cuticles, they may become dry, torn and even feel uncomfortable when rubbed against clothing or while doing daily tasks. Try getting a cuticle oil or cream and applying it once or a few times a day. Not only will doing so keep your cuticles looking good, but it will help your nails grow nicely as well! Store-bought cuticle oils typically include vitamin E, as well as other moisturizing ingredients, but don’t worry if you don’t have one! You probably already own a plain oil such as avocado, olive, coconut, almond, jojoba, etc. Transfer a little bit into a small container and massage it into your cuticles every now and then. This will work just fine!

4. Wear Sunscreen/Keep Them Out of the Sun!

This is the absolute most important tip of all! Sunscreen is extremely important year round. Don’t neglect your hands! Using sunscreen regularly will keep your hands (and body/face) from developing sun spots, wrinkles, thin skin, freckles, etc. in the future. Hands can make a person look older due to these aging signs, so try taking care of them a little more. Make sure you always apply sunscreen on the backs of your hands, even when you’re wearing long sleeves in the winter. If you don’t want that “sunscreen feel” on your hands, most drugstores sell lotions with SPF. These, however, are typically not very strong. If you’re looking for something that’s more protective without that sunscreen feel, I recommend one like Biore UV Aqua Rich Waterly Essence (for face/body as well). This one is a favorite among many, including myself. It’s very light and does not leave a greasy, oily or chalky residue.

5. Limit Water Contact to 15 Minutes!

This goes for the whole body as well. It may be hard for those of us who love long, hot showers and baths or cooling off in a pool during the summer. If you want to prevent wrinkled hands in the future, consider limiting your contact with water to 15 minutes maximum. Being in the water for too long (especially hot water) strips your skin of it’s natural oils, causing dry, flaky, irritated and itchy skin. This can cause hands to wrinkle and age earlier than one might think. If you’re not so sure about limiting your shower/bath time, try making a playlist of your favorite songs that lasts 15 minutes. Once it ends, you’ll know it’s time to get out! Make sure you use your hand cream (and body lotion) as soon as you get out of the shower, bath or pool to restore the moisture in your skin!



Those are my top 5 tips on how to keep your hands soft, healthy and young! These are all things that I incorporate into my daily life to take care of my own hands.
